The ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Energy Biology showcased the Virtual Plant Cell, a leading virtual reality (VR) initiative for Australian STEM education during a special event last week.

The showcase, hosted in the state-of-the-art VR facility of partner school Trinity College, aimed to highlight the pioneering work being done for VR education to guests from government, industry and the education sector.

In a special address from the Hon. Alannah MacTiernan MLC, Western Australian Minister for Regional Development; Agriculture and Food she said of the project "we need more people to understand that agriculture is an exceptionally important and exceptionally exciting area, and we need to develop the detailed scientific literacy of our community".

"There's no doubt that this technology offers a pathway into engagement with the digital natives now occupying our schools.

"We are really pleased to see this work, and support this work".

The Minister and guests were given the opportunity to try Classroom VPC first-hand on Oculus Rift VR devices.

The showcase was followed by an inaugural VPC Teacher's Professional Development workshop, geared towards increasing the practical uptake of VPC and virtual reality technologies for education.
